In 1977 Jim Barnett got his auctioneer’s license, and the rest is history. Today the Jim Barnett Auction Service LLC has been in business for 44 years.
“We enjoy doing all types of auctions, probably the one I enjoy the most is Farm Toys,” Barnett said. “But we also do farm machinery and equipment, construction equipment, guns, knives, belt buckles, antiques, glassware, household goods, collectibles, coins, and other currency.”
One of his most interesting auctions is for Wayne Crook of Marshall, Missouri.
“Wayne has an interesting collection of farm toys that he has custom-built," Barnett said. "He has over 6000 pieces, and we auction about 600 pieces each time. We have been doing this for a few years and still have about 4000 pieces to go."
“Today real estate auctions are very popular. Once we have the buyers lined out we actually take them to the land so they can see what they are bidding on and then hold the auction." Barnett said.
Different types of auctions are held at different times of the year Barnett pointed out.
“August through April is a great time for the farm toys, January and February is the best for farm auctions, Spring is typically a time for just about any auction type, but October to January is the slower time of the year,” Barnett said. “Contrary to some belief, we get top dollar at our auctions compared to the average person having a sale on their own."
Barnett said that his company employs three other auctioneers: Levi Krumme, Marvin Schildknecht, and Steve Dalsing. Also on the team are Andrew Van Schoiack, Linda Barton, Audria Cunningham, and Ladonna Fergison. Of course, there are family members Kolby Barnett, Wyatt Cunningham, Spencer Cunningham, and Jim’s wife Julie. “We have the best team possible, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” Barnett emphasized.
