The 17th annual Union Star Mud-A-Thon hosted by the Ray Schnitker Community Park will be held next month. Brian Thompson, president of the park board, said the event is a staple in the community. The mud-a-thon was started as a fundraiser for the maintenance and upgrade of the park. The use of the funds include paying for the electricity at the baseball field, the upkeep of the concession stand and the upkeep of the playground equipment. “This is a family event and the funds go back into the community and are particularly helpful to the youth that use the park,” Thompson said. “All the funds are used to benefit the park.”

There are nine classes of vehicles that can participate in the mud-a-thon. They award trophies for the classes along with cash payouts. The entry fee to participant is $20 a driver.

“The award for placing first in each of the classes is a 100 percent payback of the entry fee,” Thompson said. “If a person wins in their class, then they’re going to get their money back. There are classes open for men and women to participant.”

The admission price to attend the event is $10 for those over 12 years old, the fee is $5 for youth 5 to 11 years old and those younger are free.

A concession stand with food and drinks will be open on the grounds during the event.
