Kansas Country Store in Leavenworth, Kansas, is celebrating 20 years of business this year.
Don and Sherry Brown, co-owners, said they opened the store in 2000 as an equine and tack shop. They soon added a large-scale livestock and pet feed supply department.
Don Brown said that Purina is their feed of choice for cattle, poultry, goats, horses, rabbits, rodents, hamsters, chinchillas, cats and dogs.
“We can order feed for any animal a customer would need,” Brown said. “There are many other animal feeds available.”
In addition, the store has a large selection and options for cat and dog supplies.
He said their equine section has saddles along with English and Western tack. The store offers a line of work and western boots such as the brands Justin and Wolverine.
After five years of business, the store was nearly destroyed in a catastrophic flood. The couple kept the business going using trailers.
“We lost everything but the community just absolutely stood by us and worked side-by-side with us,” Brown said. “We decided to expand a feed warehouse area making this entire operation around 10,000 square feet. It was truly that sense of community that pulled us up and out.”
Sherry Brown said they have since put in a gift shop and a coffee shop. They have an in-house fudge shop using their own recipe and they offer homemade pies and cakes.
She said the gift shop has a large selection of locally made family-owned products such as jewelry, honey, homemade goat soap, hand-painted kitchenware and candles.
The shop concentrates on Kansas products as well.
“Everything in the store flows together,” Brown said. “If you need something for a backyard to barnyard it’s in here.”
In 2011, they established a nonprofit named Hope Inc. that serves as a low-cost spay and neuter clinic for pets and they have an animal shelter.
