The 2019 Midland Empire Ag & Rural Lifestyle Show will be held at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph this month. Cindy Barnes-Cornelius, event director, said the show began in 1989. She is president of Cindy Barnes Productions, Inc., which produces this event. “The idea for an ag show in this area started because St. Joe is the hub for the whole midland empire area and it relies so much on agriculture for the economy,” Barnes-Cornelius said. “I started doing some research and visiting with local businesses to begin the show. I also attended other farm shows to see how they did what they did.” She said the show is celebrating 30 years and fills a niche that was missing in Northwest Missouri, Northeast Kansas, Southeast Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.

“The idea for an ag show in this area started because St. Joe is the hub for the whole midland empire area and it relies so much on agriculture for the economy,” Barnes-Cornelius said. “I started doing some research and visiting with local businesses to begin the show. I also attended other farm shows to see how they did what they did.”

She said the show is celebrating 30 years and fills a niche that was missing in Northwest Missouri, Northeast Kansas, Southeast Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.

“We pull attendees from a 90 mile radius for this event,” Barnes-Cornelius said. “We’ve drawn vendors from 15 to 20 states over the years.”

The show is currently accepting additional vendors and will until space is full. The cost for a booth varies depending on location at the Civic Arena.

She said the show offers vendors geared to families.

“One of the highlights of the show is the Ladies Area where there are vendors that include jewelry, clothing and Thirty-One Gifts,” Barnes-Cornelius said. “We will also have a petting zoo again this year that children in particular enjoy.”

She said the show is designed for farmers, ranchers and anyone living a rural lifestyle.

“Agriculture covers a big spectrum and farming has changed over the years,” Barnes-Cornelius said. “We have vendors for large and small farms. We want to appeal to everyone. This event is also a great place for people who are not farmers to learn about agriculture. There are many people who do not know where their food is coming from when they go to the grocery store.”

The ag show will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan 25 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph.

Tickets to enter the show are $3 for adults, children 6 to 12 years old are $1 and children 5 and under are free. Tickets can also be found at St. Joseph Tractor Inc., Derr Equipment in Savannah, Missouri, and Merz Farm Equipment in Falls City, Nebraska.
