Southeast Community College opened a new learning center in Falls City, Nebraska, in 2019.
Holly Carr, learning center coordinator, said the 9,500 square-foot facility includes four classrooms, a large manufacturing space and a health sciences area.
The campus has a focus on welding and nursing programs. The campus has a state-of-the art welding space and the nursing program includes a patient simulation room.
“The facility offers the nursing assistant program and the licensed practical nurse program,” Carr said. “We’ve created spaces that are patient simulation rooms that are a replica of a hospital room with manikins so students can learn the skills hands-on in a clinical-style setting.”
In addition, the facility allows for the completion of a 60-hour gas metal arc welding certificate class and offers space for the skills to be tested.
“We have eight welding bays with state-of-the-art welding equipment,” Carr said. “We’ve received a Nebraska workforce training initiative grant so we’ve added other equipment such as an iron sheer and bandsaw.”
She said credit and non-credit courses are offered, as well as business and industry training.
“We offer classes where they can get continuing education units,” Carr said. “For example, we offer forklift operator training and electrical classes.”
Southeast Community College has three campuses located in Beatrice, Milford and Lincoln.
She said the learning centers are part of the college’s plan to better serve the educational needs of the communities within their 15-county service area.
They have opened other learning centers in Nebraska City, York, Hebron, Plattsmouth and Wahoo.
Carr said they offer leisure learning classes such as barn quilt painting and bread baking classes. They also have classes on navigating Microsoft computer programs and using cell phones.
She said they are asking for input from the public on class topics to offer in the future.
“We offer tours of the facility and we do open the facility as a rental to businesses and organizations to offer training,” Carr said. “This is a great tool and resource for this area.”
She said the learning center also organizes bus trips including seeing entertainment at the New Theater Restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas.
They are also currently offering a class on buying, selling and evaluating antiques.
The Falls City Learning Center is located at 3200 Bill Schock Boulevard. They can be contacted by phone at 800-828-0072. Carr can be reached by email at HCarr@southeast.edu.
